Mandelbaum/Kahn Straw-bale House (Series 1)

Forestburgh, NY

JUN-SEP.2004

These photos show the construction process from the beginnings of the frame until the straw bale installation. I purchased a digital camera in August and started shooting more with it due to its practicality on the work site. There is a little overlap, but for the most part Series 2 picks up digitally where this film series ends.

What is missing at the beginning is the ugly process of building the foundation. It was raining constantly as we slogged around in the muddy trench, so taking photos was least in my mind. It was such a joy to be working on dry, level ground; the first photo here was taken with great pleasure right before we broke for the 4th of July week.

Don't miss the photos of the bathing area and the kitchen that I built from materials found on-site. Both survived the full six months I was there, but I dismantled them when I left in November.
