True Believers and Victrola @ The Continental Club - Austin, Texas

03.APR.2002

Alejandro Escovedo's old band The True Believers doesn't get together very often, so it's a big deal in Austin when they do. There wasn't much advanced warning for this show, but I was in the right place at the right time -- and I got to stand right in front of the stage. (My ears were ringing for at least 3 days after.) Javier Escovedo, on the left, was doing Pete Townsend kicks right over my head. A couple of guys in the crowd behind me used to see them play here back in the 80's; they kept making sure I was appreciative of the truly historic event in which I was participating, and were glad that someone was documenting it.

In the second set of pictures is Victrola, a young swing band that played happy hour (known as "hippie hour" at the Continental Club, because it's free) earlier that night. I talked to them before the show and they were really friendly, and were quite happy to let me shoot photos while they played.
